“The loud, boisterous noises of the world make us deaf to the soft, gentle, and loving voice of God. A Christian leader is called to help people hear that voice and so be comforted and consoled.”
–Henri Nouwen, In the Name of Jesus: Reflections on Christian Leadership
What about Martin Luther King, Jr. or Fannie Lou Hamer and Christian leaders of social justice like them? Were they called to be the “soft, gentle” voice of God to “comfort and console” societies of oppression? No, they brought disturbing and disruptive prophetic truth. Jesus knew there was a time to rebuke and a time to console.
