Everyday during the community announcements at Recovery Cafe, Sue waves her hand high and shares enthusiastically, “Today I have 375 days sober and I met the love of my life.” Everyday the number increases, but the proclamation that she has met the love of her life remains the same. While it’s true that Sue has met a kind man, the deeper truth is that she has met and fallen in love with herself. Becoming acquainted with and beginning to love our true self is what happens when we are loved, not abandoned.
Longer-term healing communities are crucial to that movement from knowing ourselves as abandoned to knowing ourselves as loved. That’s why Recovery Café is committed to sharing our model through the Recovery Café Network. The hallmarks of this model are: accountability that comes with being deeply known and loved; the expectation that everyone will be a contributor; opportunities to develop new skills and harness natural gifts through positive, life- giving activities; encouragement to develop leadership potential; and a deep sense of connection and belonging.
Based in Seattle, Recovery Café Network has helped launch Recovery Café’s in 11 other cities across the US — one in our nation’s capital, in southeast Washington DC, called Recovery Café DC (RCDC). We are committed to spreading this model until loving communities, — not abandonment or incarceration — are the norm for how we treat those suffering from addiction and other mental health challenges in our country.
