Holy Awakening

O Most Holy One, thank you for this day.
Thank you for your love.
Thank you for the opportunity to love.

This Sunday is the first day of the season of Advent preparation for the coming of Christ. A time of waiting, watching, wondering, and nurturing our souls to be welcoming.

WAKE UP!
The gospel reading is quite jarring.* Every year, no matter which of the 3 years of the church’s new liturgical cycle, the gospel story from Luke, Matthew, or Mark begins with apocalyptic ending. The heavens and the human heart are shaken to their foundations. The Son of Man approaches; we are called to stand with  heads raised.

How can we do this? All that we thought we knew is not. Fear and grief weigh us down. What on earth is life all about?

I raise my head enough to acknowledge the mystery and look into Jesus’ eyes, penetrating with compassion. My mind sees the arc of his life in the stories we hear each liturgical cycle. Humble beginnings. Daily life raised in humble circumstances. Formed in the words of the ancient faith: Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength, and love your neighbor as yourself. Deeply listening, Jesus takes on what is his to do to show us divine love enfleshed.

Every day, through the confusion and chaos of life, we are called to stand as bearers of God’s love. Stand in the breach where the Suffering Christ stands. Stand in hope with the Resurrected Christ. Stand alongside the vulnerable and those needing help to stand and be able to raise their heads with dignity. Stand with those who came before us to better our common life and with the children now for a better future. Stand recognizing the holy ground of our precious beautiful earth to hold our feet steady.

Every day, I pray for humility, faithfulness, steadfast love, mercy, and gratitude.

For More

I recently came across this grounding song Centering Prayer (feat. Andrew Peterson & Leslie Jordan) and other songs that inspire on the album, Sanctuary Songs, from The Porter’s Gate.
