“Join Laila El-Haddad for her second LIVE cooking class with the museum, as she guides us through the recipe for Rumaniyya, a seasonal Palestinian dish comprised of stewed eggplants, pomegranate, and lentils flavored with distinctive Gazan spices. We will cook together while discussing the intersection of food, culture, and politics.
Laila, also known as “Gaza Mom,” is the co-author of the award-winning cookbook, Gaza Kitchen. She is also a social activist, policy analyst, and journalist. She frequently speaks on the situation in Gaza, the intersection of food and politics, her own personal journey as a Palestinian mother and journalist, as well as on contemporary Islam.”
The Museum of the Palestinian People is now open on Saturdays at its location on 18th and T Street, NW.
Festival Center Soft Reopening For Bill’s Birthday! – 3-4:30pm
“Stop by the Festival Center Saturday, September 12, for a socially-distanced birthday and advocacy party!
To celebrate our soft reopening this week as well as the birthday of our Executive Director, Bill Mefford, and to engage in opportunities for advocating for justice, we will host a socially-distanced, come-as-you-are birthday and advocacy party Saturday September 12 between 3-4:30 pm. No need on planning on staying the whole time, we will be stationed outside the front of our building to make this as safe as possible and we will all wear masks!
We will have a couple of quick advocacy opportunities, plus tiny cupcakes! Plus, you will get to safely and briefly visit with Bill and others.
We at the Festival Center have missed seeing everyone so we want to do something that allows us to see one another, have some fun, and make a difference!”

“Are you a healthcare provider who wants to better serve patients across cultural differences?
Are you a person of color who struggles with the medical system?
Do you want to be a better ally to those struggling with racial health disparities?
If so, this is a conversation you don’t want to miss.
Racial health disparities make clear the need for a dialogue on race and health that can lead to transformation.
In this Lunch & Learn, racial equity and healing expert Milagros Phillips will guide us through:
- Historical context for why communities of color distrust the medical system
- The source of racial disparities in healthcare
- Distrust of healthcare providers
- Institutional attempts to change the system
Join us on Monday, September 14 from 12-1:30 EST.”

“Randy and Edith Woodley will lead us in an important discussion about White Supremacy and Climate Change. This Teach-In will focus on how the current Western worldview of the nature of the relationship with the land has changed over time, in particular, a mechanistic worldview which is responsible for the majority of our current climate crisis. Join us September 17 at 7 pm EDT!”
