(My faith community, Bread of Life, recites this liturgy each week. It’s the heart of who we wish to be. We’d love to have you come visit us any Thursday night at 7p.m., above Life Asset building at 2448 18th St. NW D.C. ALL are welcome. -Jim Marsh, Jr.)
Leader: Throughout scripture, bread is a constant image for having what is needed for life. Bread is literally the foundation for physical sustenance. Many of the most important stories of our tradition involve feeding miracles that rely on it… Manna was given in the desert, the widow shared her last crumbs with Elijah, Jesus multiplied the loaves for the crowd… Without physical bread, there is no life.
Community: At the same time, bread is not enough. Life is more than physical sustenance. When facing the tempter, Jesus responded that people cannot live by “bread alone.” There is another kind of bread, another foundation to sustenance, which is beyond the physical. The eternal.
Leader: Abundant life requires both forms of bread. Our church seeks to live in the intersection of both dimensions where truest life is found.
