A Word of Life

Just inside of the retreat house entrance hangs a sign that reads, “All guests who present themselves are to be welcomed as Christ” (from the Rule of St. Benedict). It is a daily reminder to me of the one thing to keep ever before me in all I do to offer retreat hospitality at Dayspring’s Overlook House.

This comes to mind as I read the familiar Martha and Mary gospel passage.* Often this story leads to reflection on who one most relates to and then lively debate about being vs doing. I don’t know if Jesus was aware of how this story would animate us, but I trust there is a message here that like all of Jesus’ teachings, leads us to true life.

Do we listen and hear God’s word above all the competing voices and projects, sensory stimulation on our screens and life swirling around us? What is “God’s word”? I hear it as something that

  • bears life-giving fruit
  • touches the heart
  • blows open the mind beyond preconceived notions
  • empowers one to be generous, compassionate, and to love beyond measure
  • takes shape in self-giving
  • offers healing, restoration, and rest

God’s words call us to be creative not destructive, to be honest not deceitful, to uplift not shame. God’s word moves us inward to our deepest identity, outward in service to others, and together to listen and work for a world where creation thrives and everyone belongs and has gifts to share.

Whether I’m wearing my Mary or Martha hat at Overlook, the essential thing is to be tipping that hat to God’s word and way. I ask myself, am I Christ-like in my doing and am I welcoming Christ in friend and stranger.
