“For me, writing is an act of reciprocity with the world; it is what I can give back in return for everything that has been given to me. And now there’s another layer of responsibility, writing on a thin sheet of tree and hoping the words are worth it. Such a thought could make a person set down her pen.”
–Robin Wall Kimmerer, Braiding Sweetgrass, pg. 152
Or take up her pen again…with a deep sense of Gratitude for ‘the thin sheet of tree’ and an Awareness that the words she writes down are Sacred…a wondrous relationship can emerge.
This seems a bit odd, reading the second sentence, as I am, on a screen which I have no intention of printing and knowing that it could have been written the same way. I probably should be hearing the underlying environmental concern, but that gets hard when that sentence can also be read as a poor attempt at humor. At the end of the quote I would like to add “and open her word processor”.
