Meister Eckhart

The Wind Will Show Its Kindness

A man
born blind can easily
deny the magnificence of a vast landscape.

He can easily deny all the wonders that he cannot touch,
smell, taste, or hear.

But one day the wind will show you its kindness
and remove the tiny patches that
covered our eyes,

and we will see God more clearly
than we have ever seen
ourselves.

Be Ready

We must learn to look through every gift and every event to God and never be content with the thing itself. There is no stopping place in this life--no, nor was there ever one for any man, no matter how far along his way he'd gone. This above all, then, be ready at all times for the gifts of God and always for new ones.

What We Do or Who We Are

People should not worry as much about what they do but rather about what they are. If they and their ways are good, then their deeds are radiant. If you are righteous, then what you do will also be righteous. We should not think that holiness is based on what we do but rather on what we are, for it is not our works which sanctify us but we who sanctify our works.

All That God Asks

All that God asks you most pressingly is to go out of yourself--and let God be God in you.

Whoever Has God

Whoever possesses God in their being, has God in a divine manner, and God shines out to them in all things; for them all things taste of God and in all things it is God's image that they see.

At Home

God is at home.
We are in the far country.

Work, Outward and Inward

The outward work can never be small if the inward one is great, and the outward work can never be great or good if the inward is small or of little worth. The inward work always includes in itself all size, all breadth and all length.

Becoming Fruitful

Becoming fruitful as a result of a gift is the only gratitude for the gift.

God's Nature

God is never weary of loving and working.... God loves for the sake of love, works for the sake of work, and therefore loves and works uninterruptedly. God's work is God's nature, God's being, God's life, God's happiness.

Be Prepared

Be prepared at all times for the gifts of God and be ready always for new ones. For God is a thousand times more ready to give than we are to receive.
